About The Chequers

Traditional Hospitality at The Chequers

Of all the pubs in Stevenage, The Chequers is surely the best place to make the most of our weather (come rain or shine) - with a delicious meal, a thirst quenching drink and the cherished company of family and friends. Soak up the warmest of welcomes and explore some of the most popular pub food menus in Hertfordshire. Try one of our hugely satisfying seasonal dishes with a glass of fine wine or sample a rewarding pint of our regularly changing and highly quaffable cask-conditioned real ales.

A Little Pub History

Dating back to 1774, The Chequers was originally used as a farmhouse on a 40 acre farm which included a slaughterhouse. Taken over by the St. Albans brewer in 1820, by 1871 the grounds also included a lodge, a thatch barn and a cattle barn. Granted its full license in 1919, The Chequers is now also a grade two listed building.

Around The Area

Dating to 1774, The Chequers is a listed building, originally a farmhouse, and today there are still many woodland walks to explore in the area addition to historic treats to visit such as Knebworth House.
