The Cowherds is well known throughout Southampton and across Hampshire as a fine country pub. A popular pub restaurant famous for great food, our location on the lovely Southampton Common provides an ideal retreat from the city. There is always a warm welcome with roaring log fires, freshly prepared food, a great select of real ales and a diverse wine menu for you to choose from.
A Little Pub History
Built in 1762 on the site of the old cowherd's house, we were renamed the Southampton Arms for a brief period in 1857 before reverting back to the Cowherds 14 years later. We have maintained the name since, paying note to our heritage and our location - Southampton Common, one of the UK's most important wildlife sites.
Around The Area
We are the ideal stop off for those exploring the Common, also welcoming nature enthusiasts en route to the New Forest National Park. Our close proximity to more urbanised areas such as Shirley and Totton ensure an escape from hectic modern life, whilst our central position between Bournemouth and Portsmouth means we frequently welcome guests travelling between the two cities.

Open every day
Our standard opening times are below but we may open earlier on certain days depending on local demand so please do call us to check if you would like to visit us before midday.
Monday to Saturday 12pm to 11pm.
Sundays 12pm to 10.30pm.
Food served all day
Monday to Saturday all day to 10pm.
Sunday all day to 9.30pm.
