About The Crown

Traditional Hospitality at The Crown

Of all the pubs in Colchester, The Crown is surely the best place to make the most of our weather (come rain or shine) - with a delicious meal, a thirst quenching drink and the cherished company of family and friends. Soak up the warmest of welcomes and explore some of the most popular pub food menus in Eastern Rivers. Try one of our hugely satisfying seasonal dishes with a glass of fine wine or sample a rewarding pint of our regularly changing and highly quaffable cask-conditioned real ales.

A Little Pub History

After the siege of Colchester in 1648, Parliamentary soldiers came looking for John Wenlock, a loyalist who had long suffered for his support of Charles I. When they eventually found him, he was hauled to the Crown Inn, where he was brought before the rest of the troopers and their commander-in-chief who were lodged there.

Around The Area

Our impressive black and white timbered inn with its pretty gardens dates to at least 1648. It's near Ardleigh Reservoir - a lovely walking area - and is a popular stop off for travellers from Ipswich and Felixstowe.
